Happy Monday! I know it’s not always happy but today it is because Creatives Couples is back! I’m very excited because this one of two times you’ll be seeing the lovely Lisa Yoder, a developer from Philadephia, on the blog this week. Lisa currently works at Urban Outfitters as a developer and is married to the very talented Chad Ostrowski who is a Ruby developer at PipelineDeals. I’m extremely jealous of their double-developer power. While both my husband and are front-end developers, we definitely don’t get to focus on development as often as we’d love to. I’m so excited to have Chad and Lisa on the blog today and they’re sharing so many great things! This is a really great interview so please stay tuned.

What makes you a creative couple?

Lisa: We’re both professional web developers, which is a pretty creative endeavor unto itself. Development is very technical but also very creative. Like design, it’s all about solving problems in the most elegant way possible. Outside of web development, we also each have other creative interests and pursuits. We’re both writers, and we played in a band together in (and a little after) college. I’ve got a long list of things I’d love to make or experiment with in the categories of photography, art, publishing, textiles, writing, jewelry making, and the list goes on.

Chad: The band that Lisa referenced will be reborn this year, but we’re working much harder to make it a shared endeavor this time (previously it was mostly my baby). We’re nursing some songs together in the evenings, and will share them with the world when they’re ready. I’ve got my own list of things I’d love to make and grow into; my categories are astronomy, writing, merch design, industrial design, etc. I’m currently working on writing (not illustrating) a children’s picture book about animals, sounds, and perspective, which is nearing the end of the research phase.

How does your relationship inspire you creatively?

Chad: Hmm… Tough question! At one point in my life Lisa was probably my muse, but infatuation doesn’t last forever.

Lisa: Chad is constantly working on a new project or mulling over a new problem. Watching him follow through on his ideas and curiosities is hugely motivating for me to try new things and not take myself too seriously. Seeing him fall in love with web development was also a catalyst in my recent career change.

Chad: Ok, Lisa’s answer reminded me of something. Over the past year & a half or so, I’ve seen Lisa grow into newly discovered strengths and figure out what excites her. At the same time for me, an old project that I had grown to see as my most meaningful work, as just maybe the seed of one of my life story’s best narrative arcs—this project ended. I was left feeling light. But “light” feels too positive. However, “empty” feels way too negative. I just had a lot of options, all of a sudden. I had a lot of time to fill. I suddenly had the opportunity to re-determine what story I wanted to tell. Seeing Lisa find her story, while all of this was happening, was incredibly inspiring. It inspires me to find my, and our, best story to share with the world. And at a much more mundane level, it inspires me to stick to the slog every day. Write blog posts, be engaged (and engaging) on Twitter, and do the work that eventually leads to fruit.

Do you think being creatives makes it easier to understand each other?

Lisa: Yes and no. We can understand one another’s frustrations and celebrate one another’s successes, but I think we require different conditions for doing the work and approach it differently. I like lots of quiet, solitude, and time to work things out on my own before presenting them to anyone for feedback, and Chad is much more open in his process. Also, we’ve known each other for 13 years, been together for nine, and been married for four and a half, so we’ve grown to understand each other a lot along the way.

Chad: Haha, yes. I like to share the earliest stages of a creative endeavor with anyone who will listen. I like to brainstorm publicly. This confuses and frustrates Lisa! She doesn’t want to hear my unpolished ideas! However, we both like some privacy and space when we’re actually executing on our vision (when we’re slogging, I guess), especially with writing. (In fact, we’re not even working on this Google Doc at the same time as each other, so that the other won’t see our unfinished thoughts!)

How are your creative styles different?

Chad: I guess we just answered that a little bit in the last question! 🙂 But they differ in lots of ways. The way we brainstorm, the specific styles we prefer… I tend to want to skirt a little closer to cheesy, meta, self-referential, unpolished, and Lisa pulls the other way.

Lisa: Chad is a little bit silly (but in a good way!), and I am more serious. Anything I produce feels very much like a part of me, moreso than it does for Chad. I like a lot of space to dream and plan alone in my head before starting anything. Perhaps that’s a weakness.

What is one trait you admire in your significant other?

Chad: How deeply she feels. Also her work ethic, but that was two traits.

Lisa: He is deeply and unapologetically strange and doesn’t care what people think of him.

How does your environment affect your ability to create?

Chad: I could take “environment” to mean lots of concentric circles of environments. Home/apartment: when we returned from a trip to Chicago last September, I realized that I focus better when things are really clean. We’re not always the best at treating ourselves to this, though. City: Philly’s a great city for creative pursuits! I am constantly excited by the abundance of activities I see going on in the city, and there are tons of networking opportunities. Country: Oh, you know. Freedom and corruption and blah blah blah. Probably a whole paper worth of thoughts here. Earth: I freakin’ love Earth! What a great planet. I’m very inspired by our clouds and our moon. Other planets don’t have such nice things!

Lisa: The city is wonderful for making connections and hatching ideas, but for me it’s harder to do the work here. It’s very easy to get sucked in to all the amazing things Philly has to offer! I grew up on a dairy farm in a very rural area, and it’s the perfect place to retreat and focus on getting things done. There’s just so much physical and mental space there. Someday I’d love to split my time between city and country, with dedicated workspaces in each place.

What is your dream project?

Chad: I have concentric circles of dream projects. (I’m loving concentric circles today!) Ok, maybe they’re not totally concentric. But I have lots of dream projects. After the children’s book finds its way to publishing, I want to try my hand at making music pay some bills. I want to interact with our audience and have them collaborate with us in writing our songs, and I want to sell them fabulous merch. I want a couple of other ongoing projects to be part of this, which will probably be called “Dinosaurs Out Loud” and “Why Believe?”. I’d like to be able to perform live music, but only when it suits us, instead of as a chief means of marketing. All of my other projects get pretty day-dreamy, but since you asked about dream projects: I might want to be part of the Buckminster Fuller institute, because it seems like they’re doing a sub-par job of popularizing Buckminster’s work, and his legacy deserves better. I’d like to work with our local food co-op to develop technologies that allow people to live trash-free if they’d like to. I’d like to popularize the bidet with the American market. Yes, the bidet! With good design and marketing, I think it’s possible! Finally, I’d like to make a company that solves the problem of you using the internet on a subway, because if we can make the internet work with those sorts of latencies, then the Mars settlers can have two-way internet (I just can’t stand the thought of them having read-only internet!). …These are all of the dream projects I can think of right now.

Lisa: As far as development, I have an app idea I discussed a little bit during Alt Summit that I want to create in the next year or so. Aside from that, any project that merges technology, travel, publishing, community, and art would be a total dream to me. I’ve also been dreaming of editing an anthology of creative work by people who grew up in an Anabaptist culture that would also include interviews with them on how their background influenced their creativity and work.

What advice would you give to other creatives in relationships?

Chad: Love is a journey, a conversation, something that you must both endeavor to create together. It’s not a place or an end. Feelings, like all things, ebb and flow. When the tide is out, you still have to be willing to put in the slog together.

Lisa: Be patient with each other, and give each other space if needed. It’s always exciting to have time alone and then to reunite and share what you’ve been working on. Be encouraging, and offer supportive and constructive criticism, but also praise. A solid relationship requires you to put in the work, just like any other creative endeavor, but it’s worth the hard work.

We have two creative couples for you to get to know in Philadelphia. So if you’re ever in town, reach out to Chad and Lisa and buy them a hot beverage! If you’re not in Philly, get to know them by connecting below.

Hello friends! It’s the first Monday of the month which calls for another installment of our Creative Couples series. I’ve gotten to know some incredible people through this series thus far and I highly encourage you to reach out if you’re a creative who is in love with another creative. I am really excited to day to feature designer and photographer Christie of Bedsidedesign and her husband, Ian, who is a writer and photographer. A few months ago I stumbled across Christie’s blog and absolutely admired the way she supports other bloggers. She is co-founder of Postmark Society, a fun pen pal exchange between bloggers through Postable. Her design residency series with Celestine and Kate was a longstanding favorite. I’m always in awe of bloggers who make time to support other bloggers by being genuine which is why I wanted to feature Christie and Ian. I also had a fabulous time reading Ian’s answers which I think you all will enjoy. Thank you Christie and Ian for being a part of this series!

What makes you a creative couple?

Christie: We both love creativity. From visuals to music to interiors we have a very similar design aesthetic and can appreciate our own work and others. I’ll never forget our friends comments when they helped us move into our apartment last year…they kept repeating, “We’re just moving musical equipment, technology and art stuff…do you guys own anything else?”….the answer – not really!

Ian: We’re both really into design. Christie tends to go more into the home design, artwork, style, etc side of things, as well as photography and lots of visuals. I’m into photography, videography, different kinds of graphics, especially text overlays, and then writing in general. I tend to have a strong interest in psychology, and art-meets-cognition.

Since we both like music and visual art, we balance out pretty well. We can ask each other for input on how something looks, how well something reads, if things make sense.

How does your relationship inspire you creatively?

Christie: Ian is a big thinker. He continually inspires me with the ideas that he is stewing on. I try to keep him involved in the projects that I’m working on to get a fresh perspective. One of Ian’s talents is connectivity – if I’m struggling with a way to communicate multiple ideas he is my go-to.

Ian: We usually find that if we want to collaborate, we have great ideas or input we can give to the other person’s project. I tend to be more of a project supporter than a project initiator. I have tons of ideas, but they’re all fragments of bigger ideas, so I plug in well when people need my input. I rarely launch into something all by myself. If Christie has a great idea, it will usually give me an idea as well, and vice-versa.

Do you think being creatives makes it easier to understand each other?

Christie: Absolutely. If the dishes aren’t done but my table is full of completed projects he understands why. He also helps when I need to keep the apartment clean in order to be inspired to create – we are a team in every aspect of our lives.

Ian: Yes. I don’t have a more complex answer, just yes.

How are your creative styles different?

Christie: Ian is so advanced when it comes to technology. He is some sort of wizard. I dabble with tech but he is the master. This comes into play with his photography, and videography. His editing always impresses me. He also is very precise about each creative project he works on. He narrows things down and works well on one project at a time.

I’m into the more tangible creative outlets and I have a select few that I am trying to “master”. I need to touch, feel, and create something that I can then hang up, hand out, or put in the mail.

Ian: Christie is probably more of a legit artist with her work and ideas. I love art, but I feel like I approach it with more of a scientific view. I like finding the formula to create something (which seems like it wouldn’t be artistic, but I think it is). I like knowing the details, the parts, memorizing the components, and analyzing the structure of something. But I can’t grab a canvas and slap paint on it. When I try, I always hate it.

Christie can grab a brush, throw something very specific, or very abstract on canvas, and it will look great, and I’ll love it. She will too, but she’ll say she doesn’t think it’s that great. It usually is. Christie is also way more consistent. I’ll brew an idea for weeks and then try to pump everything out at once. She paces herself well, and is consistent in what she does.

What is one trait you admire in your significant other?

Christie: His brainstorming process is something that I admire. He is very scientific when it comes to finding the best way to execute things. This is also what makes him an amazing baker – he loves following steps. I like to switch things up each time.

Ian: Dedication to one idea/project until its completion, with a general ease about collaborating with people. I like collaborating, but I tend not to trust others with my projects immediately, which is probably why it takes me longer to start, but then I finish everything really fast. She can keep something going for a long time. She can also decide what she likes/loves really quickly. I tend to jump around. When it comes to creative projects, I have wandering eyes.

How does your environment affect your ability to create?

Christie: I try to cultivate an environment that is conducive to help both of us get in the creative zone. Like I alluded to earlier – sometimes having a messy apartment works while others it disrupts my flow. Keeping a realistic clean apartment helps my sanity. We also try to work with what we have. We dream about having a small house but with a serious studio space…oh how I dream of it….

Ian: We don’t have a lot of space, and the space we have is multi-purpose. Our dining area is also where Christie does calligraphy. Our second bedroom is also my office where I work from home 8 hours a day, and it’s our personal office where we do most computer-necessary things. We’re not suffering for space, but it still feels like there’s not enough. The more space I have, the better I think. Long term, we’d love to have a house with a dedicated space that could be a large office, studio, and workshop.

What is your dream project?

Christie: What an awesome question! Since I’m about to launch my own calligraphy business I would LOVE to see my calligraphy letterpress printed – both artisan skills are very close to my heart.

Ian: Probably working on a documentary, or any kind of large scale travel project. I wouldn’t necessarily want to be in charge though: I’m not ok planning everything, just managing one specific aspect, and doing it really well.

What advice would you give to other creatives in relationships?

Christie: Maximize your creativity together – find out what your sweet spots are and encourage one another in them. Don’t be afraid to push your significant other – but don’t nag – no one likes that. Don’t spend all of your time being creative – I think Ian said this perfectly.

Ian: Be creative together, be creative apart. Take time to have fun. If you’re creative people, you’re probably going to figure this out on your own, since that’s your nature. Don’t be introverted all the time: spend time with people who are dissimilar from yourselves. If you’re the absent-minded creative type, take time to have a planned, fancy date or vacation. Never get offended if the other person critiques your project, and never get offended if the other person ignores your critique of theirs.

If you’re ever in the Syracuse area, be sure to grab a cup of coffee with The Joneses as they are amazing. In the meanwhile, be sure to connect with them online!

Happy Monday! Today is the third entry in the Creative Couples series, which has easily grown to be one of my favorite things to share here. Yesterday, I celebrated my fourth wedding anniversary (eight years total) with my husband and to semi-celebrate here, I decided to showcase ourselves. Like Adam & Allie, we co-own a branding strategy studio which we’ve worked on for years. I’ve actually started to share my work from some of our previous projects in my slowly growing portfolio. So I blabbed a little too much and I want to get the interview on the way. Let’s get started.

What makes you a creative couple?

David: Everything! More specifically speaking, we’re a unique mixture of design and development. In the early days it was our passion for design that brought us together. Along the course of time, my passion evolved into becoming a web development super hero. With this unique mix, it has introduced us to many amazing people and a renewed vigor for being able to accomplish various projects together.

Angel: We’re both designers, developers, and writers. I specialize in print and identity design. David specializes in UI/UX design, front-end development, and brand development.

How does your relationship inspire you creatively?

David: Quite simply, it opens my mind to ideas that I may never have come across on my own. The complete unpredictable factor of being a creative couple keeps things exciting.

Angel: As business partners, it’s important to work to together to for the sake of the business so sometimes I think this questions seems like a no-brainer for couples who work together. However, our relationship inspires me because it’s what got me into design. I’ve always had a love for art, drawing, and writing but my love for design came from this relationship. So I’m always seeking to grow, learn, and develop my skills because I’m always inspired by what we can create together.

Do you think being creatives makes it easier to understand each other?

David: Being a creative, that view point of life is like a device that can translate and sync people on many different wavelengths. Having such an immense level of creativity between us allows for a much easier method of understand where the other is coming from.

Angel: Yes, definitely! I don’t think I can have a conversation on my love for slab-serifs with anyone else who “gets it.” It’s not that I can’t talk about things with other designers but due to how we’ve developed our skill set together, he definitely understand why I do what I do. We’re consistently looking at branding, advertising, and type everywhere we go. We can’t help it! It’s slightly obnoxious to be friends with us but then our friends will go out with us and say “Oh no, this logo is awful.” It starts to rub off on people.

How are your creative styles different?

David: I’m more color, and shape focused. Also a big fan of blues and yellows.

Angel: I’m very, very type-oriented. In the beginning, I was very meticulous about color selection. So now, as design has sort of evolved and you can get away with putting white text on a hard-to-read background, I’ve put a lot of time into type over the past few years. Not just fonts, but studying the processes behind creating letters, and absorbing way too much information about type and lettering. I think I’m also very structural and organized because that’s my nature, which probably makes me a bad creative.

I feel like David is more flow-oriented. He goes with the flow but he still very calculated. It’s what makes him an amazing developer and just the skill set he’s picked up in the past 12 months is incredible. He’s writing in Ruby and I’m just like, Git 101 please and thank you.

Having such an immense level of creativity between us allows for a much easier method of understand where the other is coming from. – David of Sevenality

What is one trait you admire in your significant other?

David: Her warm spirit. Regardless of the person, everyone is treated fairly and equally. A modern day Wonder Woman, who keeps surprising me daily.

Angel: I touched on this above, but I admire his tenacity. He’s very, very good at what he does. If he doesn’t understand something, he’s going to learn it. I think that’s what makes people really appreciate us being self-taught is that we are just good at what we do. If we aren’t, we will be eventually because we will put in the work. David puts in the work and it pays off. The projects he’s contributed to are nationally recognized and I’m proud of him. He deserves it because he works hard for it.

How does your environment affect your ability to create?

David: I pull a lot of my creativity from my environment, if for some reason I’m trapped in an office too long, I’ll grab the laptop and work outside. The calmness of nature in the early mornings and evenings allows me to escape any stress and enter a flow of productivity.

Angel: I’m organized but I need to be surrounded by inspiration. My office is sort of a mess right now so I don’t work in it. I like creating in long periods of time where I just create and I need a clear space to do it.

What is your dream project?

David: To create a unique creative incubator for individuals that will allow their creative juices and passions to flow. Ultimately leading to better communities and people.

Angel: My dream project is to brand a coffee shop. I know it’s a small project but that’s what I want to do. If you’re starting a coffee shop, call me.

Seriously, I’d like to teach what I’ve learned. I’d love to do a conference or a small group and just be realistic. I think sometimes the conferences are a little too optimistic. There’s just a lot of “You can do it if you try!” The truth is, “You can do it if you work your butt off.” It’s fun work but seriously, it’s hard work.

What advice would you give to other creatives in relationships?

David: Support each other. As creatives, getting stuck in a rut sucks. Especially if you are in one by yourself. Cool thing about being a creative couple is that you aren’t alone. So keep the support system strong.

Angel: Don’t be angry when your husband wants to use one typeface for three months. Let him have it. Seriously. enjoy each other as much as you can. The great thing about being a creative who is in love with another is that it’s never boring. You have plenty to admire, debate about, and enjoy so enjoy that company with the person you love the most.

Big big thank you to David for putting up with me on a Sunday and getting this done. We are always available for hire, especially for projects in the upcoming year. We do everything from logo design, print design, web design, and web development. We love working with other creatives so if you have any questions, get in touch! Next month’s Creative Couples will feature a very lovely bright young designer and her photographer husband and I’m really excited to have them!

If you think my husband is interesting or insane, you can follow him on Twitter or Instagram.

I’m very stoked about today’s Creative Couples feature! To get you up to speed, Creative Couples is an interview feature to introduce you to other creative couples. My husband and I have co-owned a branding strategy agency for the past few years and it’s been great. Working with your significant other creates unique opportunities for your relationship whether good or bad. Since I haven’t exactly read a book on co-working with your spouse, I decided to reach out to other couples in the industry to get an idea of what’s going on behind the lens, blog, portfolio, pen, stylus, etc.

I’ll get into some of the background story about how I reached out to designer, photographer, and blogger Allie Lehman to get The Wonder Jam featured. I began following Allie’s blog a few months ago and really loved what blogged about. Allie lives a pretty healthy lifestyle, takes amazing photos, and believes in the power of creating great brands. When I learned Allie and Adam ran The Wonder Jam together, I thought she would be perfect for this project. I reached out to Allie to see if she’d be interested and she was! Sometimes all a blogger needs to do is ask. I’m very excited about what Adam and Allie had to say about their lives as creatives so check it out below.

What makes you a creative couple?

Adam: I see the big picture. I love being able to think of creative ways to help a brand connect and market to their audience.

Allie: I’m the visual person. It’s not that Adam doesn’t love art, respond to great design or have great taste – I just do most of the day-to-day design work. Adam and I met in college and he always loved visiting me while I painted in the art building. I think it’s one of the first ways we really connected.

What drives you to work with brands?

Adam: When you see room for improvement, it’s so fun to come alongside a company or individual. It’s fun to be a part of it and work in so many different worlds.

Allie: Over the course of a year, I’ve come to realize that we’re all a “brand.” Whether we’re working with bloggers, entrepreneurs, hobbyists or large companies – we try to build the same solid foundation.

Do you think being creative makes it easier to understand each other?

Adam: Creativity is solving problems. It’s making connections. You can use the same skills in a relationship.

Allie: Adam and I are always communicating. We’re pushing out concepts, sharing ideas and critiquing. It’s made our relationship stronger and fun too.

How are your creative styles different?

Adam: I like orange. I like bold. I like lions.

Allie: I like grey. I like subtle. I like geometric.

What is one trait you admire in your significant other?

Adam: Her attention to detail.

Allie: His ability to see into the future.

How does your environment affect your ability to create?

Adam: I wish it affected me less. If I feel distracted I tend to go work at a local coffee shop.

Allie: It can be difficult (our physical environment) since we work out of our townhouse. I look forward to the time when we have a studio and don’t have to stare at our dirty dishes.

What is your dream project?

Adam: It would be with a retailer to let us work on literally everything. Interior. Advertisements. Web. Exterior.

Allie: A solid partnership with a client that allows me to surprise them with my work. And guess what? We have that dream project now. It’s amazing.

What advice would you give to other creatives in relationships?

Adam: Be secure in who you are.

Allie: Trust the other person. But then fight when it’s right.

Ok friends, I know I totally dropped the ball on announcing the contest giveaway winner, which I will do — tomorrow! Let’s not focus on my incompetence because today I am excited to start a new feature Creative Couples, where I will feature other couples in the industry. If you didn’t know, I co-own a branding strategy agency (fancy term for we work with small businesses providing design and consulting services to establish new brand practices) with my husband. We’ve been collaborating on projects together since the very beginning of our relationship so it made sense for us to work creatively together. Of course, as any SO team, it means a lot of challenges but a lot of opportunities to share creative visions.

I wanted to start this feature years ago to discover other creative couples out and about on the web just to share their perspective on what it’s like to be in a long-term relationship with a creative. I’m ecstatic to have Melissa of Jelly Design Studio and Nick of A Design Geek as my first couple. I will give you a short back story so I can get to the good part! Melissa, who is also a designer and owner of an amazing blog template shop, reached out to me via Twitter after the launch of Sunshine Bloggers a few months ago because she lives in the same town as we do! After that meeting, I learned that her husband Nick is also a designer and can be often seen selling minimalist prints around local comic conventions. After another meeting passed, I could say 100% that I absolutely adore them. Nick has a great sense of humor, might be obsessed with Iron Man, and has a great eye for creating simplicity. Melissa loves Tangled, has an amazing work ethic, and enjoys connecting with other creatives in the industry. I asked them a few questions, which they totally agreed to. I want to say thank you to them for being amazing and allowing me to showcase their awesomeness. I hope you guys enjoy them as much as I do. (P.S. – I’m not even sorry about how long this blog post is)

What makes you a creative couple?

Melissa: We both work with design – but my main line of work is web design. I design and develop custom blogs and websites for bloggers and small business owners. I love my line of work because I get to meet so many creative and talented people from around the world.

Nick: As designers in our own respective fields, the joy of designing is what brings us together. As a designing couple we our are own first critics. I design minimalism work of art from of genres of entertainment. My new found passion is selling at the Comic Con shows where I get to interact and see the appreciation towards my artwork from potential customers.

Do you think being creatives makes it easier to understand each other?

Melissa: As different as our creative styles are I think it helps us understand each other…

Nick: …but at the same time our different forms of medium cause minor clashes to arise.

What is one trait you admire in your significant other?

Melissa: I love how he takes action when he has an idea, which is how his side of the company started. When he gets an idea in his head he goes for it and gives it a try. He used to only sell vinyl license plate tags – then one day he just decided to start drawing once again and his line of minimalist art posters came to life. 🙂

Nick: She is one of the best multi-taskers I know. She handles so much of her business plus book keeping, packing orders, and website updates for my business. I am always grateful for having a partner as great as she is.

“…the joy of designing is what brings us together.” – Nick of A Design Geek

How does your environment affect your ability to create?

Melissa: If I am in the same environment for too long it tends to get put me in a terrible design rut. I need to see different things and have changes around me. When I feel that rut approaching me I try to get out of the house to experience new surroundings, watch a movie to see the colors and elements used in it, read a book to use my imagination, or just find a different creative outlet that will allow me to see things in a new way.

Nick: I am not a sitting still person. So when a design is not going well, I stop and come back to it at a later date. What has given me great motivation is selling at the shows. The environment of all the cosplayers and dedication from all the vendors has made me rethink my goals, and reach for higher one.

What is your biggest motivation?

Melissa: My husband. I know it sounds a little cheesy but he definitely knows how to push me when I feel that I can’t create anything. He always believes me even when I am filled with doubt.

Nick: Making my wife proud and use the same motivation that I use to push her to push myself.

What is your dream project?

Melissa: My ultimate dream project would be to work on a digital magazine. I love e-magazines such as Rue and Matchbook and just find it to be such a creative space where you can try out different layouts, color palettes, and combining various elements all within the same space.

Nick: It would be great to one day take on New York or San Diego Comic Con. These are the biggest and prestige’s shows in the U.S. and I would love to take on the project of selling at them.

What advice would you give to other creatives in relationships?

Melissa: Be honest. As a couple sometimes it’s easy to be biased about anything we design. He loves my work, I love his work. But occasionally when we find flaws or have some feedback it might be a little hard to come out with it but it’s definitely important. Feel free to give constructive feedback (just be polite about it) because sometimes we get stuck in a rut and keep designing the same things. Giving honest feedback is good way to create a challenge and help each other get out of any design rut. That’s what always helps us step outside of our box and try something new – whether it’s a poster design that he is working on or a new blog that I am developing.

Nick: A good foundation is the best place to start. Be there for each other when others doubt your reach as a great foundation will really help you stay motivated in achieving your goals.
