After being a designer for eight years, you become tired of hearing people complain about the price of hiring a designer/developer. I love the quote above by Douglas Martin and decided to shimmy up a print for my office using Kettering 105 (a fabulous slab-serif!). I love that this will remind me that regardless of what anyone thinks the value of my career is, design will always continue to happen. I love my industry!
How do you deal with difficult conversations in your industry?
Gosh! I think this is a really great point. Too often people are more worried about how much the design costs instead of what kind of quality products they will be receiving! It’s truly disappointing, too, when someone doesn’t want to pay how much you are truly worth as a designer because it shows that they don’t value your time as much as they value their own brand!
I agree! Thank you for your insight Kory. I love your thoughts on design.
Oh man — I completely agree! Same goes for photography as well. It’s so hard for people to wrap their heads around why an image costs “so much”…
There’s also those artists out there who REALLY undercut themselves… and there for kind of hurts the market. I’ve had comments about why a certain photographer is charging less than I do… while my imagery is of much better quality.

I’m glad I’m not alone! Yes, the conversation started with, “I can find someone who will do it for (insert ridiculously low price here).” It’s just disheartening for someone not to take what you do seriously, especially when your quality of work is always great.
I LOVE this. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed that I’m becoming too focused on the appearance of things and its nice to remember that I’m going to get dressed so I might as well wear clothes I love, I’m going to live somewhere and if it makes me happy to live somewhere beautiful then that’s worthwhile.
Thank you for my comment Hannah! I’m glad you agree. 🙂
